To Run or Not To Run

So, the running regimen starts tonight. Have I told you that I hate running? I do. Seriously. Hate. It. My little brother can run for hours, gasping for breath, legs burning, and smile the whole time, claiming it’s the best entertainment there is. At which point I wonder what aliens have taken over his brain.
I was on the track team in high school, for two years. Assuming the same equipment is on the track today, I could tell you the best place to duck down and hide in order to avoid warm-up and cool-down runs. I quit training for the shotput after my junior year, not wanting to endure another season of Hill Explosions (running up the hill at a sprint, over and over and over and over…..you get the point). I loved my events (let me point out that I was not a runner, I was an eventer – shotput and discus), and had a blast with my friends on the team, but would do almost anything to avoid running.
For the past few years, I have had this crazy idea that I want to do adventure races and triathlons. Problem is, both involve running. There’s a possibility that I could write to these organizations and convince them that the running portion is insane and archaic. But something tells me that possibility is actually less than remote. Obviously the people that do these races enjoy the running part. They, too, must have aliens in their brains.
So, I’m left with the dilemma: train to run, or don’t race.
I start training tonight.
